Embracing the Curve: The rise of curved Architecture and cabinetry in 2025
Architecture and interior design is always evolving in response to the influence of nature, advancements in craftsmanship and technology as well as changing aesthetic preference. In 2025 a trend hard not to note that is sweeping both residential and commercial design is the embracing of the curve. Flowing forms, organic shapes and soft edges. Undulating building facades fold into arched cabinetry and rounded furniture. Maybe a Mid-Century, Art Deco revival, era's we note many of clients have loved to embrace over the years, however, it is now becoming a luxurious demand.
Architects are increasingly challenging the boxy confines of traditional structures, creating fluid spaces, creating a sense of calm and connect. So how does this translate in the world of cabinetry and joinery design. Here at Podocarp we have certainly seen curves slowly creep into design plans that we have received over the last year, now these are a staple and ever evolving. Kitchens and bathrooms are at the forefront of the cabinetry changes we are seeing, rounded kitchen islands, curved vanity edges, arched shelving units and bullnose cabinet profiles.
What does this mean as cabinetry gets curvaceous? Well a lot more nose scratching for us and challenging planning! It can be said without a doubt that all curves come at a cost, so it is important clients understand the nature of this. Adding a curve to a cabinet adds dollars, irrespective of its intricacy. Production needs skilled cabinet makers (like us), a lot of planning and often design engineering. Curved cabinetry and joinery has to be custom made to fit the space and purpose, it needs to meet both the aesthetic brief as well as space efficiency (curved units may not optimise storage effectively). Structural integrity needs to be upheld when departing from more standard geometry, whilst offering the finest finishes and material options fro clients.
This trend is supported by the products we are able to utilise these days, pliable and versatile materials. Wood veneers and moulded plywood along with others, enable the production of fluid design without sacrificing durability. All these need skilled craftsmanship to elevate these designs to an arguably sculptural level with preserved functionality.
Curved timber cabinetry brings elegance and softness, but it requires careful planning, so our tips prior to committing to curved designs are;
Budget
Material Choice - Not all materials can be bent or transformed so readily. So if your set on something get your cabinet maker involved pronto to support with options.
Design with function in mind - Ensure you consider the use of the space as much as the beauty. Like anything , it is a balance.
Where next...? We expect curves are hear to stay for a while and will likely merge with broader sustainability options and smart home integration. For us, we have embraced this trend happily, admire all our finished products, have the pleasure in seeing happy clients, however, curves will certainly keep the challenge alive.
As we always say. Get your cabinet maker and joiner on board at the start of any new architectural build or renovation. We work alongside your wider team and help transform your idea's into dreams (sentimental, but true).
