THE MAKING OF FINE CRAFTMANSHIP

Since its inception, Podocarp has been a business derived from extensive experience and stemmed from passion, creativity, precision, skill and knowledge in cabinet makers Christchurch.

As one of the leading cabinet makers Christchurch in the Canterbury region, Sean is an exponent of this functional artistry. He has combined many years of dedication to handcrafting furniture and love of utilising the natural properties of timber into his own business, transcending the bespoke furniture industry. With Sean at the forefront of the fabrication process, the business focuses on quality custom cabinetry, something mass machined production can not mirror.

They are a leading business of choice by top architects, builders and designers in the region for the construction of their specialist one off joinery and furniture draughts.

As well quality and precision being a driver to the business' work philosophy, their knowledge of furniture design as well as crafting enables them to deliver the client's idea into their full aspiration.

In an era of professional refurbishment that has out driven the more frivolent DIY times that often produced deficient results, Podocarp stands at the forefront of quality, specificity, as well as enduring wear and style.

Podocarp cabinet makers Christchurch is located in Ferrymead, Canterbury, however their client base is not limited by these geographical boundaries. The team can assist with cabinetry aspirations from anywhere in the South Island including Lake Wanaka, Queenstown & Nelson.

Waste reduction and recycling is a key component of the functioning of the workshop entity. Embracing opportunity in sustainability is another key focus of the business. Please see our 'Sustainability' page for further information on how we deliver this ideology and we how we can help you meet your desires in this area.

OUR PEOPLE

Meet the team behind Podacarp.

SEAN THOM

With over 30 years experience Sean has dedicated his whole working life to master this specialist art, becoming a well known name throughout the region for his quality master crafted pieces. Sean’s extensive portfolio and eye for detail and perfection allows him to put his cabinetry makers hand to anything that is formed out of timber. This has allowed him to extend the scope of his traditional skill set and meet the demands of the ever changing consumer market. Sean has a particular passion for individual solid timber custom pieces, whether it be for domestic household or top end commercial outlet or office. Sean is also a Master (literally) on the football field and enjoys listening to music in his down time.

SIMON CARRODUS

Simon brings a passion for all things timber, as well as his previous business experience. His furniture and joinery career started at Polytech in 2011 and has now progressed to see him co-found Podocarp Cabinetry with Sean. Simon brings a real focus on ‘Customer Satisfaction’ and ‘Staff Culture’ to the business, along with a good deal of fun!

LOUW BUTLER

With a background in Engineering which included the completion of his PhD, Louw took the decision to follow his passion for furniture making and change his career path. In latter years he has completed his apprentership in Cabinet Making under the experience eye and guidance of Sean, and is now at the forefront of fine, quality furniture production as a head figure in the workshop of Podocarp. His former role has given him a sound foundation for cabinetry, with a translation of his skills into the design and logistics of crafting with timber, as well as helping streamline the performance of their manufactoring systems.

FRANK HAUGHEE

Frank recently joined the Podocarp team after relocating with his family from Wanaka. Frank has been in the joinery industry for four years and has almost completed his apprenticeship. Frank's prior work saw him specialising in Kitchen manufacturing and installation, something he can certainly transfer into the custom cabinetry created at Podocarp. His transition into his new team has fueled excitement and further ambition "being on a team producing unique, heirloom pieces that will last for generations, is one of the most rewarding aspects of working with timber". Outside the workshop Frank can be found spending time with his young family, reading, and enjoying nature.

WARRIC HITGE

Warric has always had a passion for music and all things timber. Combining these two interests has seen him both designing and building hifi speaker systems in his years prior to joining the team at Podocarp. His prior experience has also seen him immersed in interior and exterior decorating as well as historic restoration, which has given him both a keen eye for attention to detail and a love for wood work that lasts through the ages. “A passionate group of artists, the smell of freshly machined timber and the opportunity to learn from true specialists is what makes working here at Podocarp so special to me.” Warric has an essential mix of eclectic skills that he brings to the Podocarp workshop, invaluable when creating the one off custom pieces and designs that the team do. Warric continues to produce music in his spare time and loves spending time outdoors with his partner and friends.
